ASHTON RARE 2004 UNSMOKED SOVEREIGN SG3 CUMBERLAND SADDLE BILLIARD ESTATE PIPE

Description

Rare indeed, this is a very difficult pipe to find even in smoked state! Bill Ashton Taylor made this pipe in 2004 and is one of the last high grade Sovereign's he ever made before passing away in 2009. The Sovereign SG or Straight Grain was graded from 1-5 with this one a 3 and it certainly shows why. Bill created this grade to rival Dunhill's Dead Root offering the straightest and finest of grain. To find an unsmoked SG in any grade is truly a treasure! This one is a classic saddle Billiard shape and while the Sovereign SG did not carry size designations, this one would be an LX which is comparable to a Group 5 or large Group 4. Quintessentially English it offers a muscular bowl that sports remarkably thick walls surrounding a healthy chamber affording perfect capacity. The shank is round and quite thick and reminds me of a Dunhill LB while meeting the gorgeous Cumberland saddle stem with amazing "grain", straight bit and inlaid briar dot logo. The finish is always the same on these and reminiscent of a Root Briar, a light but warm medium that perfectly highlights the exceptional ultra fine angel hair straight grain wrapping almost 360 degrees with some birdseye to the rear while the rim is loaded with tiny birdseye as well. A phenomenal opportunity to acquire one of the finest pipes Bill ever made, this one is for the utmost discerning collector and is simply not to be missed!
