Description
This is a real deal 1970 L78 396/375HP short block. The casting number on the block is 3969854. The casting date is J 8 9 which decodes as October 8th, 1969. The block has never been surfaced and the factory stampings are intact on the front pad along with nice factory "broach" marks. The pad stamping reads: T1025CKO which shows this block was originally built as a 1970 396/375HP engine for a Chevelle, El Camino, Nova, or Camaro backed by a 4 speed manual transmission. The partial VIN for the car the engine was original installed in is stamped by the oil filter. The partial VIN is 10L136889 as shown. The car may still exist, I have not searched for it. This engine would make an excellent replacement for a 1970 Camaro, Chevelle, El Camino, or Nova that is missing its original engine. It would also be a great period correct engine for a hot rod. This engine recently came out of a estate where it has been stored for decades. The man who owned this built a lot of 454 engines and I imagine the top end was robbed for a 454 build and this lowly 396 engine was put on the shelf. This shortblock is still standard bore and turns over freely. The cylinders have a very light ridge at the top and some light pitting from sitting. The rotating assembly has never been balanced. This is a very clean unmodified shortblock. I also have the oil pan and pump.
The details of each component of the shortblock is detailed below:
Block:
Casting number: 3969854. Casting date: J 8 9 Pad Stamp: T1025CKO Cylinder Bores: Standard bore with no sleeves or repairs. Cylinders look good with light pitting. I imagine it will need to be bored during the rebuild process.
Rods:
Factory GM forged "dimple" connecting rods. Stock, never balanced or modified.
Pistons:
Original GM TRW 3969974 forged pistons. Good condition.
Crankshaft:
Original GM "6223" forged steel crankshaft. Never balanced.
Timing cover:
Original GM timing cover with "AOR" tab for high performance 8 inch balancer.
Harmonic balancer:
Original GM 8 Inch high performance balancer stamped "F 9 F"
Oil Pan:
Original GM oil pan. Nice shape overall.
This is simply an awesome original 1970 396/375HP 4 bolt main short block. Don't miss this awesome chance to own a real deal early 1970 L78 shortblock!
